Find it Here...NHboat.com Friendly Squam? Sqam Lakers
are a group of fine people, they just had a reputation for wanting you
to stay the hell of their lake. The problem was the only public access to Squam was owned by the Squam Lakes Association, and the ramp was very difficult to use. Boaters were forced to squeeze into a tight staging area to get their boats into the narrow channel between Little Squam and Big Squam. Also they had to back their trailers from the middle of Route 113, a heavily traveled road. In 1998, the state Fish and Game Department tried to buy a piece of waterfront land for a boat ramp, however, several homeowners joined together to outbid the state. Though state laws require public access to all large waterways, the Squam Lakes Association had argued the public had access through town beaches and the association's boat ramp. In 1999, a deal came together when the association agreed to donate its boat ramp, a neighbor agreed to donate three boat slips, and land for a parking lot became available. The ramp is still in the same place, however, the new ramp will allow people to turn off Route 113 to an access road leading to a much larger staging area. Construction began in the fall and will be completed this month. The ramp officially opens Today (May, 1).
