The Ice is Out!

Winnipesaukee "Ice out" was officially declared at 6:50 PM, Wednesday, May 2.  Although most of the lake was clear for days, Wolfeboro Bay was obstructed with ice until yesterday.  Now the M/S Mt. Washington can safely navigate to all her ports (Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, Alton Bay, Weirs Beach, and Meredith).  Although the Mount won't be making its shakedown cruise until May 5th, it is a comfort to know she could do it anytime she wished.

One big question remains.  What is everyone around Winnipesaukee going to talk about now that the ice is out?  Here are a few facts* you might not have known, that you can share with your fellow "ice out fanatics".

  • This was the latest ice-out since Nixon was in the White House.

  • Only 8 years since 1851 have had a later ice out.

  • This year is one of 13 years (since 1851) to have ice out declared in May.

  • This is the latest ice out on record in the 21st Century.

  • This is the second earliest ice out on record in the 21st Century.

  • There was a lot of ice this winter, now it's gone.

  • It's too late to take your bob house off the lake.
